Preschool (Kindergarten 1–3)

Kindergarten 1
(3½ – 4 years)

Children are introduced to the basics of literacy, numeracy, and discovery through play-based learning. Language: Recognise letters of the alphabet and their sounds (vowels & consonants) Trace lines, curves, and eventually letters Identify beginning letters of words and pictures Mathematics: Identify colours, shapes, and sizes Count and write numbers 1–20 Simple addition and subtraction (within 10) Compare numbers and sets Science: Identify parts of the body and five senses Distinguish healthy vs unhealthy foods Recognise transportation and weather Differentiate plants and animals

Kindergarten 2
(4½ – 5 years)

Building on early skills, students begin structured reading, writing, and deeper exploration of the world. Language: Sound, read, and write letters of the alphabet Copy three-letter words, sight words, phrases, and sentences Read short word families, sentences, and stories Associate pictures with words Mathematics: Read, write, and spell numbers 1–20; count up to 100 Compare sets of numbers (, =) Add and subtract within 10 Introduction to fractions and ordinal numbers Read a clock Science: Learn parts of the body and plants in greater detail Identify animal young and needs of plants/animals Deepen understanding of senses and care for them Differentiate living and non-living things

Kindergarten 3
(5½ – 6 years)

The final preschool year prepares children for a smooth transition into Primary 1. Language: Write the alphabet in correct order Read and spell three-letter words, blends, and sight words Identify rhyming words and opposites Copy and read short phrases, sentences, and stories Mathematics: Count and write numbers up to 100 Spell number words (1–20, multiples of 10) Skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s Add and subtract within 20 Solve simple math problems Read time, identify fractions, and compare numbers Science: Explore human body and senses in detail Identify needs of people, plants, and animals Recognise school community members Learn about weather and states of matter (solid, liquid, gas)

Guidance, Encouragement, & Direction

At Tinkerbell, we recognise that every child learns at their own pace. Our teachers provide opportunities for children to:

  • Explore their environment through play and inquiry

  • Develop physical coordination, emotional wellbeing, and social skills

  • Build language and number foundations

  • Express creativity in multiple ways (“languages of learning”)

  • Share progress with parents through documented observations and profiles

Kindergarten 1 emphasises social and emotional development, while Kindergarten 2 and 3 introduce more structured learning, ensuring children are confident and ready for Primary education.

Grading System

The Preschool Department follows the Ministry of Education’s averaging system:

  • Assessment Test: 50%

  • Quizzes: 25%

  • Homework/Projects: 10%

  • Attendance/Participation: 15%
    Pass grade: 65%

Conduct is assessed qualitatively based on:

  • Courtesy towards staff and peers

  • Respect for diversity and disabilities

  • Care for school property

  • Orderly behaviour in class

  • Following teacher instructions

  • Wearing the school uniform

  • Personal grooming and hygiene

Persistent behavioural issues are addressed in close partnership with parents, as discipline is viewed as part of personal development, not punishment.
